Hi, new reader here :) I’ve just finished reading your blog and I saw you mentioning a couple of times that you haven’t read Pokemon manga. I think you might enjoy it. It’s surprisingly well written and shows some aspects of Pokemon universe that you may find interesting (like different kinds of trainers – fighters, trainers, breeders… or more of N’s story). Also, Gary/Blue equivalent isn’t as much of a jerk as he was in games/anime. It’s possible to find it online, I highly reccomend it :)

Oh, I’m sure I would.  From what I’ve heard, it’s a very different and quite interesting take on that universe.  Unfortunately I just don’t have time for it right now!  Maybe over summer, when I don’t have so much work to do… but thanks anyway!

You’ve touched on the moralistic complaints about the Pokemon franchise before (your post on Torchic, Combusken and Blaziken). I’m on a similar ground to you, seeing teamwork etc being more of what Pokemon is about, but you can’t ignore the fact that violence and animal abuse seem to be essential in fostering that partnership between trainer and Pokemon, can you? Teamwork it may be, but the Pokemon take 100% of the physical side of things. Would you consider doing a post on this issue?

Hmm.  Yes, yes I absolutely would.  I’ll just let that percolate for a couple of weeks and see what I come up with…

Your anon who mentioned rivals I agree with. Also I look forward to that. I know it’s been a meme, but I want to see if we can draw some real evidence, that in the games, Green/Blue/Gary is actually a kid who has it as bad as the memes have claimed him to. Not to mention Silver, I haven’t gotten far enough into mangas to know his story, but he has been such a mystery for so long.

Well, I don’t know anything about the manga, but Blue in the games is a total jerk.  I don’t really think you can rehabilitate him at all.  Also, I kinda think I said everything I care to say about him in my Champions series, so I probably won’t cover him again when I do the rivals.

Silver, though… Silver really fascinates me.  He has actual, honest-to-goodness character development!  Actually, Silver is practically the whole reason I want to do a series on the rivals; I think he’s far and away the most interesting.  Well, unless you count N, which I think I might.  Hmm.

The rivals of the various games are worth a post or two i feel. They honestly have quite alot of interesting features that id love to here your point of view on.

It’s on the list – along with Eeveelutions, the top ten creepiest Pokemon, a playthrough journal of Black/White 2, more anime, a series of unstructured ramblings entitled “If I Were In Charge,” and a history of Kanto.

Basically I have a tonne of stuff I want to write, and I promise I’ll get around to it all eventually. 🙂

Any plans to review the Elite 4’s and Gym leaders of the games in a similar manner to how you reviewd the champions? (obviously not individually, that would take forever)!

Well, I might… with a few exceptions, though, those guys don’t get enough characterisation to be particularly interesting, so if I did, I would probably focus on quite different ideas – changing notions of what Gym Leaders and the Elite Four represent as the games develop, that sort of thing.  I’m not totally sure there’s actually enough there to make a whole series of entries out of it, but I guess it might be worth a try.

I’m just wondering, are you ever going to do a “Top Ten Most Overrated Pokemon” list?

Hrm…

Tricky.

What would I base that on?  Pokémon that get a lot of attention for being powerful, but have flawed or uninteresting designs?  Pokémon that Nintendo dote on even though they’re weak?

The tricky thing about “overrated” is that it implies there is some sort of rating for me to evaluate.  I don’t really think I could do this without some source of data on the popularity of different Pokémon.

Greetings!!!! Before I begin… Love the blog! Anyways… Just a suggestion… Since your so opinionated about pokemons… Why not do a post or two about some original ideas of yours? I personally would like to see you design a elite 4 champion idea… You could talk about his personality, his pokemons and all that good stuff. (of course after I’ve heard what you think of iris in BW2) Thanks!

You know, I keep meaning to do that.  I mean, not designing a champion, specifically, but do a series of entries on how I would run the games if I were in charge.  I just keep coming up with *other* things I’d rather do first.  So, er… it’s in the pipes.  So to speak.

I really liked your posts about every region’s champions and teams. They were interesting and made me think (ex: realizing that Steven could have been so much more). Could you analyze more humans of the pokeverse?

Hmm.  Maybe?  The trouble is that there are relatively few human characters that get a lot of decent characterisation in the games.  I don’t think I could come up with enough material for a full entry on a Gym Leader or Elite Four member, for instance.  Maybe the Professors…?  Or rivals…?  Yeah… yeah, I could probably do a series on the rivals.  At some point.  I can’t remember at the moment what I was planning to do after my next thirty-odd anime episodes; it can’t have been that important…

TL;DR – suggestion noted.  I’ll think about it.
