Will you ever continue your Pokemon anime reviews? I find your speculation on the anime universe to be very interesting, and it’s actually what drew me to your blog in the first place. It’s a shame to stop without even completing the Indigo League.

Y’know you have actually commented on this at just the right moment, because I totally want that to be the next thing that I do (alternating with the ongoing Nuzlocke story).  I always meant to go back to those because I honestly think they are some of the best stuff I’ve written; I just never got around to it somehow.  But yeah, this is absolutely going to happen.

Hi just curious, why did you decide to put Vileplume and Bellossom into different houses? And what does it mean for Oddish and Gloom to belong to two houses? (Disclaimer: I don’t watch GoT)

As for what it means, probably nothing.  I guess just some Oddish are born into “House Vileplume” and some into “House Bellossom.”  As to why I gave them two different sets of house words… well, I’m not 100% consistent on how I deal with split evolutions.  Vileplume and Bellossom are separate because the most compelling mottos I could come up with were ones that emphasised the day/night contrast between the two.  Some other split evolutions are going to get a single shared motto because I felt their most important traits applied to both of them.  Nidoqueen and Nidoking technically aren’t a split evolution, but again, they share the motto “By Our Royal Blood” because the most important thing about them is their emphasis on family, which only makes sense when they’re together.  Eevee, when we get to her, has her own house and motto because she is special.

So hey I just wanted to let you know you’re like my favorite single blog I follow that isn’t run by one of my personal IRL friends and you make me laugh all the time. I also thought that you Roman Glass thing was facinating (even if I admit Im in a very small demographic) and would love to see more history stuff.

D’awww, thanks!  Knowing that people enjoy it is probably the main reason I keep this up, so it’s much appreciated!  I sort of feel bad about spending a lot of my time on the history/archaeology stuff instead of Pokémon stuff, since it’s (I assume) not really what most people read my blog for – but sometimes if a topic is on my mind a lot anyway from work, it’s easier to bang something out quickly.  I’ll definitely keep that up, subject to inspiration striking. 🙂

I don’t want to sound demanding or ungrateful but can you please post the ‘House Words’ at a quicker rate? I’m absolutely loving them but we’ve got more than 400 species to go – I can’t bear the thought of waiting a year to see them all! Keep up the good work dude.

Eh… I’m… kind of happy with the current rate, to be honest.  Although I theoretically have most of them written already, there are a lot I wasn’t happy with the first time and have to revise, and it takes time to put together the banners, and I’m also trying to make time for writing amongst my real-life responsibilities.  So… sorry, but this is what I’m comfortable committing to.

I’m, uh, not sure what house words are… but I think this sounds neat?

In the TV show Game of Thrones, and the Mediaeval fantasy novels on which it is based, each of the ‘houses’ – the great noble families – has so-called ‘house words,’ basically a fancy name for a motto, like House Stark’s “Winter Is Coming,” or House Greyjoy’s “We Do Not Sow.”  Promotional materials for the show include posters that depict a house’s sigil (a wolf, a giant squid, a three-headed dragon, whatever) alongside its motto, and one of the internet’s pastimes is creating new images in this style for other people or groups, like “House Google – We Are Feeling Lucky,” “House Wayne – We Are the Night,” or “House House – It’s Never Lupus.”  Google image search “Game of Thrones house words” and you’ll get some idea of what’s going on here.  HBO has a website where you can make your own.

Hello, I just read your Roman glass post and went through your non Pokemon tag, and I’m wondering if you had another non-Pokemon blog (or maybe just an academic blog) I could also follow?

I don’t, no; I’ve kind of been tempted on occasion to start one, but to be honest I have quite enough trouble keeping up with this one as it is.  Mostly I post this stuff to reassure people that, when I vanish for a month at a time, I am in fact doing something arguably useful.
